The dental hygienist

The tasks performed by the dental hygienist are primarily aimed at prevention - preventing caries (cavities in teeth and molars) and gum disease. In addition, the dental hygienist also performs curative tasks (= aimed at healing), such as treating gum disease.

Removal of tartar and polishing the teeth

The care of mouth and teeth consists of the removal of dental plaque. This is a thin, often invisible sticky layer that stays attached to the teeth and teeth during the day. It mainly consists of food residues, mucus and bacteria.
Dental plaque has about the same color as the teeth and is therefore difficult to see. It is everywhere and therefore between teeth and molars.
If dental plaque is not removed for more than 24 hours, it can harden into tartar. Tartar can occur both above and below the gums. This is removed with the help of special instruments and can therefore only be done by a dental hygienist and dentist.
After a dental cleaning, the teeth are polished so that all teeth and teeth are smooth again. This way the teeth stay clean longer.

Periodontal treatment

When oral hygiene is inadequate, the gums may be so inflamed that the supporting tissue located under the gum is also affected. Treatment then consists of cleaning the tooth surfaces under the gums combined with oral hygiene instruction by carrying out the patient himself. This requires several appointments.

Bad breath (halitosis)

Someone with halitosis always smells out of his mouth. Halitosis is quite common and is therefore not rare. Bad breath does not go by itself. However, in most cases it is easy to remedy.

The treatment of children

Children learn at the dental hygienist how they can maintain their teeth daily. By means of good information and explanation to parent and child with preventive measures such as fluoride applications and nutritional advice.

M-codes are used for normal dental cleaning with a small to moderate amount of tartar and for slightly inflamed gums.
